Noah's Ark

A lady called and asked me if I could do a cake for a baby shower. The baby's room was done with Noah's Ark, and she wanted to know if I could tie that in somehow...so this is what I came up with. It was a lot of fun!

Wedding Cake

I was asked to do two wedding cakes over Thanksgiving weekend for a wedding....a bride's cake and a groom's cake. I was excited that she wanted a fondant cake because I got to try out a new recipe that my mother-in-law gave me. Here are pictures of the bride's cake (the groom's cake was another Razorback cake like I've done before....didn't think I needed to put it on again!).

Golf Cake

My neighbor asked me to make a golf cake for her brother.....here's what I did!

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

On a Thursday in October, Nate's mom called to say that the doctor's had only given his grandfather a few more hours to live. I figured we'd end up just flying Nate up to the funeral which was going to be held the following Monday. Around 7:30 that evening, I asked Nate what he was thinking about doing, since he really hadn't mentioned anything. He said he'd looked online, and figured we should all just jump in the car and head up together. I was like "ookayyy"....thinking.....I have to get 4 of us ready to drive 30 hours to Idaho in like 4 hours so we can get a so-so sleep to leave by 6 or 7 am.....oooookayyyy! So we jumped on it. I pulled out the suitcases, started the laundry, and pulling things out of closets. When lainey heard, she was VERY excited! She had all 3 suitcases packed in a matter of 10 minutes (too bad they were full of stuff for her, and nothing essential!). She was excited to see all of her cousins! So we drove the 31 hours to Idaho. On our trip to Idaho, we went....Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas (again), New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho. On our way home, it was about 28 hours of driving....Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas (we hit 12 states in 6 days of driving). You ask, why did you go the 31 hour way if there was a shorter way......Answer....to stay with family in Utah for the evening (to not pay for a hotel), and then as a bonus, my mom was there in Springville visiting my grandma, so we got to see her! A note of apology......to anyone in any of the states mentioned whom we would have LOVED to see, please note that we really didn't have time to stop and see people, and we wish we did. So please do not be mad at us! So we made it to Idaho Sunday evening and then we were able to stay for the week in Idaho. We hadn't been to visit Nate's family since July 2006, so it was nice. On Monday, we were busy with funeral things. Tuesday, we had a picnic with Grandma and Grandpa and went to a cousin's birthday party. On Wednesday, Nate met up with his brother in Boise and they took some of the kids to Cabela's. I got to go SHOPPING with my sister-in-law. We hit the jackpot at Old Navy! On Thursday we went into his sister's in Boise. On Friday we went to another sister's to watch the BSU game (the boys did) while the girls made hair bows. Then there were lots of other things in between! Then early Saturday morning, with 2 sick kids running fevers in tow, we loaded up the car and headed back to Arkansas. Here are some pictures from our trip.....

This is one of the suitcases that Lainey packed for us....

Our first sunset in over 2 years (you can't see the sunset in our part of Arkansas...to many trees), we're somewhere in Texas.

Lainey with my cousin (her second cousin?) in Springville....they are about 6 months apart and were instant friends!

Happy HaLlOwEeN!!!

We had a lot of fun for Halloween this year. Lainey wanted to be Tinkerbell and I found a cute dinosaur costume for Corbin. As most moms with girly girls know, Tinkerbell the movie came out 3 days before Halloween. Anyways, we rented it Thursday (it is really cute) and Friday when it was time to start getting ready, I asked Lainey how she wanted me to do her hair. She proceeded to show me by trying to put her hair up by herself and saying it had to be up on top of her head "in a big big circle like Tinkerbell's". So she was VERY happy to see her hair when it was done. Now, her costume did come with matching Tinkerbell wings, but at the last minute, she brought me these pink wings she's had for about 2 years and told me she wanted to wear them. Rather than fight the battle (no...I paid for these wings, you're going to wear them), I told her it was up to her and she chose the pink ones. We hit the 'downtown' area and then visited some houses of people in our branch. Then we came home and did our 'neighborhood/cul-de-sac' when it got dark. In years past, Lainey has been very shy when it came to trick or treating. This year, she was running up to the doors on her own (leaving us in the street) and doing it all by herself!

6 Months Old!

Yes, Corbin is 6 months old! Time has just flown by! I can still remember all too vividly the day he was born (so well that right now, I am not in the mood for #3)! He's growing like crazy! He hasn't gone in for his 6 month check up yet, so I don't have the official numbers, but we've weighed him at home and he's a good solid 20 pounds! Yes, that's right, 20 pounds! Lainey wasn't 20 pounds until like 17 months old! He's also starting to wear 12 month clothing! CrAzY! He's not rolling over yet (although I think he really could if he wanted to). He is such a happy baby....mellow and easy going (from his father) and has been a blessing to our family! We sure do love him!

State Fair!

Last year we got excited when the county fair came to town. We thought it would be something new and exciting to do. Coming from Utah and Idaho, we've been to some good fairs! We got Lainey all hyped up about seeing all the animals and what fun it would be. Boy, were we in for a BIG disappointment. There were 2 cows, 0 horses, no pigs, no sheep, nothing! Lainey was soooo sad. So this year, we thought we would try out the state fair. We picked the right day to go (Monday).....parking was a $1, parents who brought kids got in free, and there were free kiddie rides until noon! Lainey had a blast on the rides, but, since other people had the same thought (don't people have to work on Monday's?) as we did about the "cheap" day, there were lines at all the rides! So we rode the rides until noon then went to find some animals. We must have picked the wrong day for animals, because there were no cows there yet, only 2 horses so far, no pigs....we saw some sheep, chickens and rabbits and that was about it! Oh well! It was still a fun day out!

I got tagged....sorry Susan it took me so long to get mine done! We just got back from a last minute trip to Idaho (pictures to come)!

Here's mine....
8-1-08: This was my 30TH!!!! (I still don't feel 'that old') birthday cake decorated by Lainey and Nate. Lainey LOVES to put sprinkles on cakes (if you couldn't tell).

RuLeS: Open your pictures file and select the fourth folder. From there, select your fourth picture and tell a little about it. After you are done, tag seven people to do the same. :)
Leave them a message on their blog, too, so they know!

Now I tag: Betsy, Trina, Heather, Nicoloe, Christina, Sara, Mary Lee

Miss Smarty Pants..L-A-I-N-E-Y

I've worked hard with Lainey to learn her letters and sounds and numbers and counting. She loves to learn and will sit by herself for A LONG time and just read to herself! (I tease her that she's the only kid I know who gets upset that as a punishment, she can't read......she also hates when we take her current favorite book away as a punishment!). Anyways, today she was playing with her foam ABC's and brought some letters up to me and told me to watch. She said each letter of her name and put the letters in order. I was pretty impressed! She was also very proud of herself (as she should be). And yes, I know her clothes don't 'match'....that's what she wanted to wear for PJ's last night!

Slow Dance

A friend of mine emailed this to me....thought the message was sweet

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?

You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,'Hi'

You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift...Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

Pants or Capris???

The other day Lainey was helping me fold laundry. She started laughing, and when I looked at her she said, "Look Mommy, I'm wearing Corbin's pants!" It was pretty funny in the moment, and I was a bit shocked to see that Corbin's 6-9 month pants (which I'm sure he'll be out of in the next month even though he's not even 6 months old yet) FIT Lainey. They weren't tight or anything, there was room to spare in that waste line! She's always been like that....95% percentile for heights, 5% percentile for weight! So she wore them around for a bit and before I made her take them off, Nate told me to snap a picture!

One of Lainey's favorite things to do is go to the river and throw rocks into it with her Daddy. Why she likes it so much, I'm not sure....it must just be because it's something special she does with her Daddy. We went to White Oak Lake a few days ago (it's a campground about 20 minutes from our house) and played on the playground and then went to throw rocks in the lake. Lainey loved it, as usual!

Barn Sale 9-27-08

One of the highlights for us (remember....SMALL town) each year is going to the Barn Sale. It's an outdoor arts/crafts/food show. Here are some pictures from our day.......
When Lainey heard we were going to the Barn Sale, there were 3 very specific things that she talked non-stop about wanting to do.....
1) Jump in the bouncy house and go down the blow up slide
2) Get her face painted
3) Buy a sparkly crown (made from decoration wire with shapes on it and ribbon tied to the back-sorry-no pic)
Well, she had her three things accomplished and left a very happy girl.

Lainey and the bouncy house.
Lainey got a lady bug painted on her face (this picture is rotated the right way on my computer, I've tried re-uploading it a number of times and it just keeps loading it this way....go figure!)Not until we moved here did I find such wonderful cuisine to chose from at craft fairs!

At home at the end of the day!

9-19-08 We have a BOY on our hands! I promise....he WAS clean. Corbin had just had his bath and I was feeding him his cereal before bedtime. He WOULD NOT leave his hands out of his mouth! He had cereal EVERYWHERE (this isn't the first time it's happened....it's just the first time I've actually gotten the camera out for it!). It was on his hands, arms, legs, bouncy chair, if he could reach it, it had cereal on it! He is soooo tired in these pictures....just look at those eyes!

9-20-08 Look out Elton John! Nate decided Corbin should try on some of Lainey's sunglasses! Isn't it just too cute!

Day of Firsts 9-18-08

Today was Corbin's first try in his jumperoo! I'm glad I asked my friend for it back....I really thought it may be too early, but he's just right for it and LOVES IT! It's nice to have something that he sits up straight in. He is sooo ready to be able to sit up on his own, but just doesn't have the back strength yet!

Tonight I made my first bow, too! I've bought a few for Lainey, and at the last fair we went to, I bought a couple more. Nate saw how much one was and was like WHOA....couldn't you just make them yourself. So for about a month and a half I've been meaning to try some on my own, but was just lazy. Then my friend Jill made some and told me a great website to look at.

And I also found another site

Then I went ahead and took the plunge and made my first one! Nate had to run to Wal-Mart the other day and had the kids and even bought me more ribbon to make another one for Lainey! The best part......cost me about 70 cents for everything. If I bought it somewhere....about $5.00!

We Have an Artist!

I must say, I'm pretty proud of Lainey! The last 1/2 year her fine motor skills have really taken off. She LOVES to color and here is one of her latest. She sat down with daddy ALL EVENING long and worked on this! Yes, she did this by herself (minus the dark green bushes at the top....she thought I needed a turn) and worked sooo hard! Way to go Lainey! I had kindergarteners who couldn't color this good at the end of the year after working with them ALL YEAR LONG (that's not an exaggeration!)! (Sorry, I forgot to turn the picture before I posted it!)

Day at the Park

On Saturday (Sept. 13th) Lainey, Corbin and I decided to go to the park in anticipation of Hurricane Ike and being stuck indoors for a few days. When Hurricane Gustav came, we had 3 straight days of RAIN RAIN RAIN and were tired of being indoors. We were suppossed to get hit hard by Ike, so we needed to get outside and get the wiggles out!

Here is Lainey swinging on the swings. Don't you just love the sunglasses?

Corbin is just along for the ride.

Here is what our skies looked like at 10:54 am in anticipation of Hurricane Ike storms coming our way.

Lainey loves to play on the jungle gym!

What a cutie!

So Ike has come and left us. It really wasn't all that bad. There were tornado watches out (for us) and warnings popping up all around us (but never our county). We got some drenching rain that would stop after a bit and some bad winds, but that was hit. I guess we lucked out this time!

Cakes! Cakes! Cakes!

Some of you know, and some of you may not, but I have been decorating cakes for a little while. In Denver, I took cake decorating classes and even taught some for a while (until I found out I was pregnant and couldn't teach, work at JCP, and teach cake classes). Since then, people have asked me to make cakes for them. My neighbor does a pretty good job keeping me busy....she's lived here her whole life and knows a lot of people so most my "business" is somehow tied to her...Thanks Patty! Here are some that I've done recently and some older ones.

This is a "groom's cake" I did for a 50th wedding anniversary this last week (Sept 2008).

The "wedding cake" for the 50th wedding anniversary (Sept 2008).

I found an ad for a girl looking for someone who did cakes and did this one for her husband who is a fan of this professional soccer team (Aug 2008).

This cake was for a girl's "sweet 16" party (Nov 2007).

This was for a double birthday party for two little girls (Jan 08).
This cake was for a little boy's birthday (June 2007).
This cake was for a couple in our Branch who were getting married (June 2007).
(I'm not sure why the last pictures posted funny.....on the "layout page" they look fine, but then when you "preview" and "post" they are placed funny...oh well.)
